The Palace of Versailles, along with Forbidden City in Beijing, Buckingham Palace in UK, White House in US and Kremlin in Russia, are among five largest palaces in world.
When you come to magnificent Palace of Versailles with golden walls, you will never think that this place was a forest and swamp wasteland 400 years ago.
According to historical records, in 1624 then French King Louis XIII bought 117 acres of wasteland at a price of 10,000 livres and built a two-story red brick building as his hunting palace. Over 100 years before 1789, 26 rooms in palace were expanded to 2,300 rooms. It can be seen that in history of France, king and his royal family robbed people with fat and barbarity.
During French Revolution in July 1789, people broke into Palace of Versailles and looted furniture, frescoes, tapestries, chandeliers and other interior items, and doors and windows of palace were broken and demolished. On October 6, King Louis XVI was taken by people to Paris. The history of Palace of Versailles as a royal palace ended and it was turned into ruins until 1833. King Louis Philippe ordered restoration of Palace of Versailles and turned it into a historical museum.
As a historical museum, Palace of Versailles attracts a steady stream of tourists every year from all over world, waiting in line for several hours to enter.
