Case Study: Carcassonne, France - Reviving a Medieval Castle with Tourism

The Castle of Carcassonne is an important historical and cultural monument in Europe. It was built in Middle Ages during war. Today it is best preserved ancient castle in Europe. The castle has a two-layer city wall, inner wall is a Roman-style fortress, outer wall is a Gothic-style city wall, and there are 26 archery towers in inner and outer walls. Surrounded by this two-layer city wall, small ancient city is as old as a castle.
Crossing suspension bridge and entering castle, another world is revealed inside: ancient stone roads and stone buildings reveal a strong sense of history, while hospitable inhabitants of a small town reveal seething vitality of an ancient city.

The Jean Deschamps Amphitheater with 6,000 seats adjoins Saint-Nasser church inside castle. Every summer, theater hosts famous Castle Music Festival, where visitors will experience perfect fusion of antiquity and modernity.
